Aratus

c. 315–240 BCE

Aratus of Soli in Cilicia studied with Zeno at Athens and lived at the court of Antigonus Gonatas in Macedon. His Phaenomena, which put the astronomy of Eudoxus and a collection of weather signs into Hesiodic hexameters, opens with a Stoic hymn to Zeus and became the most read poem of antiquity after Homer: Cicero, Germanicus and Avienus translated it, and Paul quoted it on the Areopagus.
