Aristophanes

c. 446–386 BC

The great comic poet of Athens and the only writer of Old Comedy whose plays survive whole. Fantastical, obscene, and fearless, he put Socrates in a basket, sent a farmer to make his own private peace, and had women seize the treasury to stop a war — the sharpest surviving mirror of the city Plato later judged.
