Nonnus

fl. 5th century CE

The last great poet of Greek antiquity, active at Panopolis in Egypt. His Dionysiaca, forty-eight books and 21,286 hexameters, is the longest poem to survive from the ancient world; he also wrote a hexameter paraphrase of the Gospel of John, and stands at the meeting point of pagan myth and the Christian late antique world.
