Pausanias
c. 110–180 CE
Pausanias, a Greek of Asia Minor, travelled through mainland Greece under Hadrian and the Antonines and described what he saw in ten books: Attica, Corinth, Laconia, Messenia, Elis, Achaia, Arcadia, Boeotia and Phocis. Sanctuary by sanctuary he records temples, statues, paintings, tombs and local rites, with the myths and history attached to each — the fullest ancient witness to Greek religion as it was practised, and the guide by which Olympia and Delphi were excavated.
