Pythagoreans
4th century BCE – 2nd century CE
Under the names of early Pythagoreans — Hippodamus, Euryphamus, Hipparchus, Theages, Metopus, Clinias, Crito, Polus and Archytas himself — antiquity handed down a body of short treatises in Doric on virtue, happiness and the ordering of the soul, most of them composed in the Hellenistic and Roman periods and preserved by Stobaeus; with them go the collections of Pythagoric sentences, among them the Sentences of Sextus.
