Vitruvius

c. 80–15 BCE

Marcus Vitruvius Pollio served as a military engineer under Julius Caesar and dedicated his Ten Books on Architecture to Augustus. The only treatise on architecture to survive from antiquity, it covers the education of the architect, city planning, materials, temples and the orders, public buildings, houses, water, sundials and machines, and the proportions of the human body that Leonardo drew.
