The bright upper air — the pure fiery sky, breath and soul of the cosmos.

Aether (Aithēr) is the bright, pure upper air — the clear, radiant region above the lower air we breathe, where the gods dwell and the stars move. In the cosmogonies he is a primordial being, born near the beginning of things from Night or from Chaos.

The Orphics revered Aether as a kind of world-soul or vital breath — the subtle, fiery medium that pervades and quickens the whole cosmos, the luminous body of the divine in which all things are bathed. Above the changeable world, he is the shining element of life itself.
