Deity
Egyptian · the Hidden One
Amun, whose name means 'the Hidden One', rose from a local god of Thebes to become, fused with the sun as Amun-Ra, the supreme deity of Egypt and 'King of the Gods'. Invisible and unknowable in his true nature — present everywhere yet hidden from all — he was worshipped in the vast temple of Karnak, with his consort Mut and son Khonsu forming the Theban triad.
Egyptian hymns exalt Amun as a transcendent power beyond the other gods, who are but his manifestations — a theology of the one concealed god behind the many that the Greeks recognized in their own Zeus (worshipping him as Zeus-Ammon) and that pointed, for philosophical minds, toward the One beyond being.
