Beloved of Aphrodite — carried from burning Troy on his son’s shoulders.

The goddess came to him as a mortal maiden on Ida — the tale of the Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite, in this library — and their son was Aeneas. Lamed, in tradition, for boasting of the union, he is in Virgil the expedition’s revered elder, dying in Sicily before Italy; his shade in Elysium unrolls for his son the pageant of Romans to come.
