The jackal-headed god of embalming who guides and weighs the souls of the dead.

Anubis is the jackal-headed Egyptian god of embalming, of tombs, and of the passage into the afterlife. It was he who invented mummification, preserving the body of Osiris, and who watches over the dead — guiding each soul into the underworld and conducting the solemn 'weighing of the heart', in which the heart of the deceased is balanced against the feather of Ma'at, truth itself.

Because he leads souls between the worlds, the Greeks compared him to Hermes the guide of the dead, and in the Greco-Roman world the two were fused as 'Hermanubis'. His jackal form, the scavenger of the desert edge that haunts the boundary of the living and the dead, made him a fitting guardian of that threshold.
