Abstraction — the stripping-away of all attributes to reach the One beyond them.

Take away everything

Since the One is beyond every name and form, it is approached not by adding predicates but by removing them — aphairesis, abstraction. “Take away everything,” Plotinus urges; what remains when all has been stripped is the source itself. The method is the practical face of negative theology, clearing the mind for the union that lies past speech.
