Hera’s plain and tragedy’s second stage — loosely, in Homer, all Greece.

Certain · the Argolid

City of the fertile Argolid under Larisa hill, seat of Hera’s great sanctuary; in Homer “Argos” stretches to name the whole Achaean world, and “Argives” the whole army. The tragedians set the Oresteia’s palace here or at neighboring Mycenae as it suited them; historical Argos, ever Sparta’s rival, sat out the Persian wars in resentful neutrality.
