PlatotemperanceSocratic

Plato’s dialogue on temperance (sōphrosynē) and self-knowledge.

The Charmides finds Socrates newly returned from battle, drawn into a conversation on temperance (sōphrosynē) with the beautiful youth Charmides and his guardian Critias.

The inquiry circles toward the idea that temperance is a kind of self-knowledge — a “knowledge of knowledge” — but, in the manner of Plato’s early dialogues, reaches no settled definition.
