Creon

Κρέων

Regent of Thebes — the ruler whose reasonable edict destroys his whole house.

Brother of Jocasta, steady regent through Thebes’ catastrophes, Creon becomes king at last over two unburied armies and issues one decree too many. Sophocles is careful with him: his case for civic order is genuinely arguable — until the prophet turns, the resolve cracks too late, and son and wife die cursing him. “A great word of the proud is paid with great blows.”
