Critias

Κριτίας

PlatoAtlantiscosmology

Plato’s unfinished sequel to the Timaeus, and the source of the tale of Atlantis.

The Critias is the unfinished companion to the Timaeus, in which Plato begins to tell of ancient Athens and its war with the great island empire of Atlantis.

Breaking off in mid-sentence, it leaves the famous tale incomplete — yet its picture of a primordial city and a vanished civilisation has haunted the imagination ever since.
