Dianoia

διάνοια · dianoia

Divided LinemathematicsreasonRepublic

Discursive reasoning — the step-by-step thought of the mathematician, below pure intellection.

The third segment of the line

On Plato’s Divided Line, dianoia is the thinking proper to mathematics: rigorous, but reasoning down from unexamined hypotheses and leaning on visible diagrams. It stands above mere opinion yet below noēsis, the pure intellection that grasps first principles without images. Dianoia moves through and between things; intellect sees them whole.
