Dike

Δίκη · Justice

personificationOrphic

The goddess of justice, who reports the wrongs of mortals to Zeus.

Dikē is the goddess of justice — the divine embodiment of right judgment and the just order of the world. Daughter of Zeus and Themis and one of the Seasons, she sits beside her father's throne and reports to him the wrongs done among mortals, that they may be punished. To the Greeks, Dikē is justice not merely as a human institution but as a cosmic principle woven into the nature of things.

The Orphic hymns sing of her, and of her sister-power Dikaiosynē (Righteousness or Equity), as the goddesses who keep human dealings honest and the universe in balance — the divine face of the philosophical virtue of justice.
