Concept
εἰκασία · eikasia
Eikasia, conjecture, is the bottom rung of Plato’s Divided Line: the state of a mind that mistakes images — shadows, reflections, likenesses — for the things themselves. It is the condition of the prisoners in the Cave before they turn around. Education begins by leading the soul up from eikasia toward trust in real things, and then higher still.
