Illumination — the irradiation by which a higher reality lights up and sustains the lower.

Light from above

The Neoplatonists describe the gift of the higher to the lower as ellampsis, an illumination: as the sun lights what it does not diminish itself to give, so Intellect and the gods irradiate what lies beneath them, present to it without descending into it. It is a favored image for emanation and for the way the World Soul and the henads shine into the cosmos.
