Εὐθύφρων
In the Euthyphro, Socrates, on his way to face trial, questions a confident young man about the nature of piety, or holiness.
The dialogue poses a question that has never lost its force — whether what is holy is loved by the gods because it is holy, or holy because they love it — and ends, like many early dialogues of Plato, in fruitful perplexity.
