NeoplatonismProclusunity

The divine units through which the One is present to all things (Proclus).

The henads (Greek henades, “unities”) are, in the theology of Proclus, the first offspring of the One — a rank of supreme unities, each a god, through which the absolutely simple First is multiplied without losing its simplicity.

Standing above being, the henads mediate between the unspeakable One and the ordered ranks of reality that follow; every level of the world depends upon its own henad as upon a presiding unity. In them the Neoplatonic instinct — that all multiplicity must be gathered from and into a prior unity — receives its most refined expression.
