TheaetetustelosvirtueNeoplatonism

‘Becoming like god so far as is possible’ — the Platonist goal of the whole of life.

The goal of life

Asked what the highest good is, the Platonists answered with a phrase from the Theaetetus: homoiōsis theōi kata to dynaton, becoming like god so far as a human can. Likeness to god means growing just, holy, and wise through purification and the virtues, and rising to contemplate the Good. It became the agreed end of the entire tradition, set even above ordinary happiness.
