Impulse — the soul’s movement toward action, following on assent.

The movement to act

In Stoic psychology hormē is impulse: the soul’s motion toward or away from something, arising once the ruling part has assented to an impression that presents it as to-be-done. In rational beings impulse is meant to follow reason and nature; right living is a matter of well-ordered impulses. Excessive, disobedient impulse is precisely passion.
