Deity
Ὕπνος · Somnus
Hypnos, the Roman Somnus, is the gentle god of sleep — son of Night and twin brother of Death, with whom he dwells in the shadowy west. Winged and soft-footed, he soothes gods and mortals alike, and could lull even almighty Zeus to rest. From his realm come the dreams that visit sleepers in the night.
The Greeks felt the deep kinship of sleep and death — the one a nightly rehearsal of the other, the brief release of the soul from the cares of the body that the philosopher's lifelong 'practice of death' seeks to make complete.
