Concept
ὑποκείμενον · hypokeimenon
The hypokeimenon is literally that which lies under — the underlying subject of which other things are said and which persists while its attributes change. In Aristotle’s account of becoming it is the matter that endures as forms come and go; in the Categories it is the individual substance that is the ultimate subject and is never itself predicated of anything else.
