Platopoetryinspiration

Plato’s dialogue on poetic inspiration and the rhapsode’s art.

The short dialogue Ion shows Socrates questioning a proud reciter of Homer about the source of his skill.

Plato uses the encounter to argue that poets and their interpreters speak not from knowledge or art but from a divine inspiration — a “magnetic” power passed, like a chain of rings, from the Muse through the poet to the listener.
