Iphigenia

Ἰφιγένεια

mythepictragedy

The daughter sacrificed at Aulis so the fleet could sail.

Summoned to Aulis on the pretext of marriage to Achilles, Iphigenia was laid on the altar so that Artemis would release the winds — the deed the chorus of the Agamemnon cannot stop remembering, her saffron robe falling, her eyes seeking pity. In gentler traditions the goddess snatched her away to serve as priestess among the Taurians; in Aeschylus she is simply the reason the queen has been waiting with an axe.
