Kairos

καιρός · kairos

timerhetoricpractical wisdomethics

The right or opportune moment — the qualitative time for action, prized in ethics and rhetoric.

The decisive moment

Kairos is time not as duration but as opportunity — the critical, fitting instant when an action will best succeed. Distinct from chronos, mere measured time, it belongs to the realm of practical wisdom and rhetoric, where everything turns on doing or saying the right thing at exactly the right moment. To seize the kairos is the art of the physician, the statesman, and the orator alike.
