PlatocourageSocratic

Plato’s dialogue on courage, and how the virtues hang together.

In the Laches two Athenian generals are asked by Socrates to say what courage is — and find, to their surprise, that the soldier’s virtue eludes easy definition.

The dialogue hints at Plato’s deeper theme: that courage cannot be understood apart from knowledge of good and evil, and so is bound up with the whole of virtue.
