Λητώ · Latona

TitanmotherOrphic

The gentle Titaness, mother of Apollo and Artemis.

Leto, the Roman Latona, is a gentle Titaness, the mother by Zeus of the divine twins Apollo and Artemis. Persecuted by the jealous Hera, she wandered the earth in search of a place to give birth, until the floating island of Delos received her — and there, beneath a palm tree, the bright twins were born.

Mild and motherly, honoured chiefly as the parent of two of the greatest Olympians, she embodies the quiet dignity of divine motherhood, the dark night from which the lights of sun and moon, Apollo and Artemis, are born.
