The Stoic ‘seminal reason’ — the generative rational principle that orders all things.

The logos spermatikos, or “seminal reason”, is the Stoic name for the active, rational principle that pervades matter and brings forth the ordered world as a seed brings forth the plant.

An expression of the cosmic Logos, present as countless “seed-reasons” in things, it makes the universe a single living, provident being — and the idea passed, transformed, into later Neoplatonic and Christian thought.
