Macrobius

LatinNeoplatonistcommentator

The Latin Neoplatonist whose commentary on the Dream of Scipio taught the Middle Ages its cosmology.

Macrobius (fl. early 5th c.) was a Latin scholar whose Commentary on the Dream of Scipio turned Cicero’s brief vision into a compendium of Neoplatonic cosmology and of the soul’s descent and return.

Read throughout the Middle Ages, it transmitted the doctrine of the spheres, the harmony of the heavens, and the immortality of the soul — drawing on Plotinus and Porphyry — to a Latin world that had lost the Greek.
