The great-souled man of the Nicomachean Ethics thinks himself worthy of great things and is so — he has all the virtues and claims the honor they deserve, neither grasping nor servile. Aristotle calls magnanimity an “ornament of the virtues,” since it presupposes them all. Indifferent to flattery and small risks, the great-souled person moves unhurried, speaks frankly, and bears fortune with measured calm.
