Platonismetymology

The 'between' — the intermediate realm of the daimonic, where love and soul mediate gods and mortals.

Metaxy, 'the between', names the great intermediate region of Platonic thought — the space that joins the divine and the mortal without collapsing the two. In the Symposium, Diotima places Love itself in the metaxy: neither god nor mortal, neither wise nor ignorant, but a great daimon who carries messages between heaven and earth and so binds the universe together.

The whole cosmos, for the Platonists, is graded by such betweens — the daimones in the air, the soul poised between the intelligible and the sensible, opinion (doxa) between knowledge and ignorance. To dwell rightly in the metaxy, ever reaching upward, is the proper condition of the philosophic soul.
