Mise

Mise is a mysterious Orphic divinity, scarcely known outside these hymns — a deity of the mysteries closely linked to Dionysus and to Demeter at Eleusis. The hymn hails Mise as a power both feminine and masculine, invoked under many names across the sacred sites of Greece and Egypt.

Such an androgynous, all-embracing figure reflects the late-antique impulse to gather the many gods of the mysteries into a single divine power — one god worshipped under countless names and forms.
