Agamemnon’s golden citadel — the Lion Gate and the grave circle of kings.

Certain · excavated citadel

“Rich in gold,” says Homer of Agamemnon’s seat, and Schliemann’s 1876 excavation of the grave circle — gold masks, inlaid daggers — made the epithet archaeology. The Cyclopean walls and Lion Gate still stand above the Argive plain; the tholos misnamed the “Treasury of Atreus” is the grandest vault of the Bronze Age. Here Aeschylus sets the beacon, the crimson tapestries, and the bath.
