Deity
Egyptian · the Weaver of Sais
Neith is among the most ancient Egyptian deities — goddess of war and the hunt and of weaving, and a creator-goddess of the city of Sais, said to have arisen from the primordial waters and woven the world into being. Self-produced and virgin, 'mother and father' of all, she was a figure of vast antiquity and authority.
The Greeks identified the warlike, weaving Neith with their own Athena. It is at Neith's temple in Sais that, in Plato's Timaeus, the aged Egyptian priest tells the visiting Solon the tale of Atlantis and chides him with the famous words, 'You Greeks are always children' — making her shrine the legendary meeting-point of Egyptian and Greek wisdom.
