Egyptian · netjer, 'god'
Neter (netjer) is the ancient Egyptian word for 'god' or 'the divine', written with a sign resembling a wrapped pole or banner. It names the divine power present in the gods, in sacred kingship, in nature, and in the images and rituals through which the divine was made present on earth.
Egyptian religion saw this power manifest in countless forms and names while remaining, for its more reflective theologians, somehow one — a tension between the many gods and the single divine that fascinated Greek observers like Plutarch and resonated with the Platonist intuition of the One expressed through the many orders of gods.
