Nomos

Νόμος · Law

personificationOrphic

Law personified — the ordering principle that binds gods, men, and the cosmos.

Nomos is the divine personification of Law — the binding custom, statute, and ordering principle that governs gods, mortals, and the cosmos alike. The Orphic hymn hails Nomos as the king who rules all things by just measure, the firm seal of heaven and earth, holding every being to its proper bounds.

Law (nomos) was one of the great themes of Greek thought, above all in its famous opposition to nature (physis): is justice rooted in the nature of things, or merely human convention? By enthroning Nomos as a god beside Justice and Themis, the Orphics affirmed that true law is no mere convention but divine — the very order by which the cosmos holds together.
