Nun

Egyptian · the Primordial Waters

Egyptianprimordial

The boundless formless waters before creation — Egypt's image of chaos.

Nun (or Nu) is the primordial ocean — the dark, boundless, formless waters that existed before creation and that still surround the ordered world on every side and beneath it. From Nun the creator Atum first arose upon the primeval mound, and into Nun all things would dissolve again were the cosmic order ever to fail.

This limitless, undifferentiated deep is the Egyptian image of the Chaos before the world — close in meaning to the Greek boundless and to the formless matter from which the ordered cosmos is drawn. Its qualities were personified by the priests of Hermopolis in the eight gods of the Ogdoad.
