Nyx

Νύξ · Nox

Primordial Night — one of the first powers, mother of dread and wondrous children.

Nyx, the Roman Nox, is Night personified, among the very first beings to emerge at the dawn of the cosmos. In Hesiod she is born of Chaos, and from her, often without a father, issue a host of powers both dreadful and necessary: Sleep and Death, the Fates, Doom, Strife, and Nemesis, but also Day and the bright Aether.

So awesome was she that even Zeus feared to displease her. In the Orphic theogonies Nyx is exalted still higher — a primal goddess who holds the cosmos in her cave and gives oracular counsel to the gods, the dark and fertile source out of which the shining firstborn Phanes arises. Night, in this vision, is not mere absence of light but the hidden, unmanifest ground from which all manifestation is born.
