On Prayer

Origen · treatise

Origenprayer

Origen’s meditation on the nature of prayer, crowned by a verse-by-verse reading of the Lord’s Prayer.

In On Prayer (Περὶ Εὐχῆς) Origen answers those who deny that prayer can avail in a world ruled by providence, arguing that God’s foreknowledge and the soul’s freedom are not at war. He distinguishes the moods and objects of prayer, then turns to a sustained, clause-by-clause exposition of the Lord’s Prayer that remains one of the earliest and finest in Christian literature.
