Οὐρανός · Caelus

primordialskyGreek

The primordial Sky — first ruler of the cosmos, father of the Titans.

Ouranos, the Roman Caelus, is the personified Sky, born of Gaia the Earth to be her equal and her covering, and the first ruler of the universe. With Gaia he fathered the twelve Titans, along with the Cyclopes and the hundred-handed giants — but, hating his monstrous offspring, he thrust them back into the depths of Earth.

In revenge Gaia gave her son Kronos a sickle, with which he castrated and dethroned his father; from the blood that fell sprang the avenging Furies, and from the foam upon the sea, Aphrodite. This violent succession of Sky, then Kronos, then Zeus became, for the Orphic and Platonist theologians, an allegory of the unfolding of the divine principles — the first, boundary-setting heaven giving way to intellect and then to the demiurgic ruler of the world.
