Sabazios

Σαβάζιος

DionysianmysteryOrphic

A Phrygian-Thracian god of ecstatic mysteries, identified with Dionysus and Zeus.

Sabazios is a god of Phrygian and Thracian origin whom the Greeks identified with both Dionysus and Zeus. The lord of an ecstatic mystery cult that spread widely through the Greek world, he was a sky-and-fertility god associated with the serpent and honoured with nocturnal rites of initiation.

In the Orphic hymns he appears among the powers of the Dionysian circle — a foreign name for the one ecstatic god under whom the mysteries gathered many traditions into a single worship.
