Selene

Σελήνη · Luna

skymoonOrphic

The Moon goddess who drives her chariot through the night — sister of the Sun.

Selene, the Roman Luna, is the Moon — a gentle goddess who drives her chariot across the night sky, sister of the Sun Helios and of the Dawn. She governs the months (whose very name recalls her), the tides, the dews, and the cycles of growth and generation in the changeable world below.

Often identified with Artemis in the heavens and with Hecate in the underworld — the three faces of a single lunar goddess — Selene is the lesser light that rules the boundary between the eternal heavens and the restless realm of becoming.
