DionysianOrphic

The mortal mother of Dionysus, consumed by Zeus's glory and raised to Olympus.

Semele was a princess of Thebes, beloved of Zeus and mother of Dionysus. Tricked by the jealous Hera into asking Zeus to appear in his full divine glory, she was consumed by his lightning — but Zeus snatched the unborn Dionysus from her body and sewed him into his own thigh until he was ready to be born.

Her son, once grown, descended into the underworld to bring her up, and she was raised to Olympus under the name Thyone. As the mortal mother of a god — twice bound to fire and to the descent and return of her son — Semele held a special place in the Dionysian mysteries, an image of mortal nature glorified.
