Tantalus

Τάνταλος

mythepictragedy

Favorite of the gods who tested them with an unspeakable feast — punished with eternal, reaching hunger.

Tantalus dined with the gods and, whether to test their omniscience or share their nectar, sinned beyond pardon — in the darkest version serving them his own son Pelops, restored afterward with an ivory shoulder. His punishment gave the world a word: to tantalize, standing forever in water that recedes from his lip beneath fruit that lifts from his grasp. Odysseus sees him so in the underworld, and every misfortune of the House of Atreus was traced by the tragedians back to his table.
