The Sage

Ὁ σοφός

Stoicidealwisdom

The ideal of the perfectly wise person, free and untroubled, held up by the Hellenistic schools.

The Sage (ho sophos) is the ideal of perfect wisdom held up especially by the Stoics — the one who knows the good, acts always rightly, and so is truly free and untroubled, “happy even upon the rack”.

So exalted was this figure that the Stoics conceded the sage is rarer than the phoenix; yet as a measure of flourishing and a goal of freedom from passion, the ideal shaped all of Hellenistic ethics.
