Thetis

Θέτις

mythepictragedy

Sea-goddess married to a mortal — mother of Achilles, petitioner of Zeus.

Courted by Zeus and Poseidon until prophecy warned that her son would surpass his father, Thetis was married off to mortal Peleus — the wedding whose uninvited guest tossed the apple of Discord that led to Troy. In the Iliad she is the poem’s tenderest presence: rising from the sea to mourn a son still living, winning from Zeus the ruinous honor he asks, and carrying down the god-forged armor she knows he will die in.
