ἀδιάφορα · adiaphora
For the Stoics only virtue is good and only vice is bad; everything else — life and death, health and sickness, wealth and poverty — is adiaphoron, indifferent to true well-being. Yet not all indifferents are alike: some are “preferred” and some “dispreferred,” giving reasonable grounds for choice. The sage selects among them wisely while resting his happiness on virtue alone.
